2022 vintage generous for Moscatel de Favaios
The forecasts for the 2022 vintage indicate a global production decrease of about 20% in the Demarcated Douro Region. However, our plateau is recording an increase in the harvest of Moscatel grapes. The cooler climate in Favaios seems to justify this positive result.
In the middle of the 2022 harvest in the Douro, Adega de Favaios had already surpassed the harvest values compared to 2021. The current outlook is to increase Moscatel grape production by at least 10%.
In statements to Agência Lusa, Rui Paredes, a member of our cooperative’s board, also mentioned that a “high-quality” harvest with “high alcohol content” is expected.
“Once again, the Favaios plateau has shown that, in difficult times in the Douro, it can withstand,” commented Miguel Ferreira, winemaker at Adega de Favaios, adding: “Despite the drought that marked the year, the soils in Favaios manage to retain some water, and the grapes, especially Moscatel, are arriving at the winery much better than we anticipated. We were surprised.”
In 2021, Moscatel production in Favaios was 6,200 barrels of wine (550 liters each), and the forecast for 2022 is around 7,000 barrels.

A grand journey for this sweet wine from Portugal, made historic by the viticulturists of the small Douro village, who are members of Adega de Favaios.

The barrels of Moscatel de Favaios Colheita 1999 continue to “work” to return even more special from this journey under the care of the Sagres School Ship.

Treasure of Aged Moscatéis from the Douro
Adega de Favaios has an enviable reserve of Moscatéis, aging in oak barrels for long years. Part of this heritage is used in younger Moscatéis blends, while another part is used in limited editions of Moscatéis de Favaios with vintage year indications.
Adega de Favaios has reason to be proud of its two flagship brands, Moscatel de Favaios and Favaíto. They are the most popular Moscatel from the Douro (80% of the region’s market share) and have won over the Portuguese (52% of the national market share).
This experience in large-volume production does not, however, negate the ability to reserve and produce aged Moscatéis; on the contrary. For a long time, Adega de Favaios has selected the best grapes for the production of Moscatéis with age and/or vintage indications and aged them in oak barrels.
The Moscatéis from Adega de Favaios Reserva and 10 Years are the most well-known and sought-after within the range of more aged Moscatéis, but the cooperative also markets Moscatéis from specific harvests, currently offering editions from 2000, 1999, 1989, and 1980, as well as the commemorative 70 Years Moscatel de Favaios. The cooperative also has other heritage reserve harvests that are no longer available for sale.
At the end of 2021, Adega de Favaios had 9.5 million liters of Moscatéis in stock. Most of this heritage is intended for Moscatel de Favaios and Favaíto, a category of Moscatel that does not have a minimum aging requirement, but which Adega de Favaios has chosen to sell only after three years of aging.
“We always have three times the amount of Moscatel in stock compared to what we sell annually. It is an investment in the future and in quality. These reserves allow us to maintain a consistent profile in our classic Moscatel. It is a seal of security and trust. It is this Moscatel that wins gold medals,” explains Adega President, Mário Monteiro.

Seventy years of life, seven selected harvests, the best from each decade. The unique edition of the new aged Moscatel from Adega de Favaios reflects the dynamism of our cooperative.
The new commemorative Moscatel for the 70th anniversary of Adega de Favaios is not only an elite and unique wine. It is also a reflection of the cooperative spirit that Adega de Favaios has successfully realized. Offering each member a bottle of this commemorative Moscatel, a blend of seven different harvests, carries great symbolism.
“We chose the best harvest from each decade of the winery’s life, aiming to create a symbolic and representative Moscatel of this cooperative,” explains the chief oenologist, Miguel Ferreira, acknowledging that the blend contains “wines with quite diverse profiles that appeal to different preferences.” The final result, however, can only be of excellence, he concludes: “Seven very good things can never result in something bad.”
The Moscatel Adega de Favaios 70 Years includes harvests that are no longer on the market (1964, 1975), some still available for purchase (1980, 1999), and others in the winery’s heritage reserve (2007, 2011, and 2020).

Memories for the Future of the Moscatel People
The history of Favaios is intertwined with that of the cooperative winery that brought the most popular Moscatel in Portugal to life. This Douro wine village has a long history and heritage that are now being captured in a book.
The Douro wine village where Moscatel de Favaios is born has much history to share. Inhabited since pre-Roman times, it was an important economic center in the Middle Ages and has played a crucial role in the Douro region, notably through the efforts of various local leaders in defending the plateau and this UNESCO World Heritage wine region.
“The wealth of heritage in our community,” as understood by Adega de Favaios, should be recorded “for future memory,” explained Rui Paredes, a board member of the cooperative, during the book launch of “Favaios, História e Património” on Saturday, November 12, at Adega de Favaios.
“This book also represents Adega de Favaios’s sense of social responsibility,” noted historian Gaspar Martins Pereira, the book’s coordinator: “The most important company in Favaios wanted to offer the people of Favaios a book about their history, their heritage, and about itself, as an integrator of the heritage and economy of Favaios.”
Gaspar Martins Pereira also praised “the strong involvement of Favaios’s vintners in the cooperative” and highlighted the importance of collective participation for the sustainable future of the parish, which is also marked by depopulation and an aging population affecting the country’s interior.
If Favaios has managed to preserve “identity aspects with two thousand years of history,” we can only conclude that we are dealing with “a people with a future,” concluded the renowned historian.
The book launch is part of the celebrations for the 70th anniversary of Adega Cooperativa de Favaios, which will also include the release in December of a commemorative Moscatel, a limited edition featuring the best seven harvests from the last seven decades of Moscatel stored at the Adega.

The alarm is being sounded by the enologist at Adega de Favaios. “Vine pruning in the Douro, as in many wine regions around the world, is aggressive and mutilating.” According to our Director of Oenology, Miguel Ferreira, this crucial early-cycle intervention is the one that “most influences the health and longevity of the plant, as well as the quality of the wines,” and is clearly “undervalued”: “We talk a lot about actions in the winery, but the vintner can influence wine quality much more than the oenologist.”
Professionalizing pruning should be a priority in the Douro, he argues, acknowledging that “it is alarming to see a producer entrusting a fundamental task for the health and longevity of the vine to unskilled workers with no experience in the field.” “A more respectful pruning approach for the vine is vital for the Douro,” he concludes.
In this spirit, the training in respectful or gentle pruning, organized by Adega between February 27 and March 3, is a pioneering contribution in Portugal to reviving old pruning methodologies that allow for a healthy vineyard and quality production over many years.
The pruning course is part of a series of meetings on regenerative viticulture that Adega de Favaios will promote in the spring of 2023. This training series, open to the entire Douro Demarcated Region, aims to raise awareness among vintners about the importance of adopting viticulture practices that enhance and enrich the vineyard soil, making them more resilient to diseases and climate adversities.
“Given its history and size, Adega Cooperativa de Favaios plays a significant role in the Douro region, and in this sense, we want to involve the Adega as much as possible in the development and pressing issues of current agriculture and ecology, believing that we are thus contributing to the sustainability and future of the territory,” emphasizes Mário Monteiro, President of the Board of Adega de Favaios.

The Moscatel Favays and the Favaita are the first Portuguese mums to get the vegan certificate.
Obtaining the vegan seal by the Favayer Winery validates an already widespread practice to all DOC Douro wines produced by our cooperative and arrives, in early 2022, also fortified wines.
This vegan certification for the Favayer Winery muscatels comes following a decision made in 2012, not to use in the process of winemaking any animal product. Since that date, new vinifications of Favaios Moscatel are also included in this practice, ending up being possible to present the vegan seal in the youngest muscatals, of batches between 3 and 8 years, in the year 2022.
It also contextualizes our primary winemaker, Miguel Ferreira, fortunately there are market-sourced (vegetable-developed, enologic products that reveal excellent results, so the direction of the Favayer Winery understood that it was a good opportunity to make wine more inclusive, presenting fit wines for consumption by vegetarians and vegans.
